The spirit of man when indwelt by God's Spirit, becomes a center of worship; of prayer, a place of song, a place of blessing, and of service. The spirit of man, as representing man's higher nature, is connected with the quality of his character. What gains the mastery of his spirit becomes an attribute of his character.

Indwelling all flesh is a God given spirit in an individual form. This was fashioned by our Creator in the inward part of man's nature and is capable of renewal and development.

"And they fell upon their faces, and said, O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt thou be wroth with all the congregation?"

Numbers 16:22 KJV

"Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me."

Psalm 51: 10 KJV

This spirit is the center and source of human life; the soul posses and uses this life and expresses it through the body. In the beginning God breathed the spirit of life into an inanimate body and man "became a living soul." 

The soul is an embodied spirit, or a human spirit operating through the body, the combination of both constituting man as a "soul." The soul survives death because it is energized by the spirit, yet both soul and spirit are inseparable because the spirit is woven into the very texture of the soul.

All your childhood memories, all your immediate memories, all your impressions, all your connections, all your emotions, all your feelings are stored in your soulish realm. The mind is where your soulish connections are stored. 

The spirit of your mind, your soul, stores all this information for you. Therefore everything that has to do with the material and external reality of your world creates a connection with your soul or a soulish connection.

"that ye put off concerning the former conversation the old man, which is corrupt according to the deceitful lusts; 

and be renewed in the spirit of your mind; 

and that ye put on the new man, which after God is created in righteousness and true holiness."

Ephesians 4:22-24 KJV

One might be able to say that the soul and the spirit are fused and welded into one substance. The human spirit is that which makes man differ from all known created things. It contains human life and intelligence as distinct from animal life.

"But there is a spirit in man: and the inspiration of the Almighty giveth them understanding."

Job 32 :8 KJV

"The spirit of man is the candle of the Lord, searching all the inward parts of the belly."

Proverbs 20: 27 KJV

You will find interesting that animals do have a soul but not a spirit. We read this in Genesis 1:20-23 where it says. . .

"And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven."

"And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good."

"And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth. And the evening and the morning were the fifth day."

Notice that God or Elohim blessed these animals and commanded them to be fruitful and to multiply, and to fill the waters of the sea but He never EVER breathed into them the breath of Life as He did with Adam.

In Ecclesiastes 3:21  we read;

"Who knoweth the spirit of man that goeth upward, and the spirit of the beast that goeth downward to the earth?"

The reference seems to be to the principle of life in both man and beast. Here Solomon is recording a question he raised when he had parted from God. The more we keep searching this topic, the more we find that unlike man, animals cannot know the things of God and cannot enter into a personal and responsible relationship with Him.

"For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God."

1 corinthians 2:11 KJV

"For he that speaketh in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God: for no man understandeth him; howbeit in the spirit he speaketh mysteries."

1 Corinthians 14:2 KJV

"God is a Spirit: and they that worship him must worship him in spirit and in truth."

John 4:24 KJV

"What is it then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will pray with the understanding also: I will sing with the spirit, and I will sing with the understanding also."

"For God is my witness, whom I serve with my spirit in the gospel of his Son, that without ceasing I make mention of you always in my prayers;"

Romans 1:9 KJV

"Only let your conversation be as it becometh the gospel of Christ: that whether I come and see you, or else be absent, I may hear of your affairs, that ye stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;"

Philippians 1: 27 KJV

So, the spirit of man when indwelt by God's Spirit, Romans 8: 16-17, becomes a center of worship; John 4:23, 24, of prayer, a place of song, a place of blessing, 1 Corinthians 14: 15, and of service, Romans 1:9, PHILIPPIANS 1; 27.

So for example, if he allows pride to master him he has a "haughty spirit."

"Pride goeth before destruction, and an haughty spirit before a fall."

Proverbs 16:18 KJV

This happens according to the respective influences that control a him, a man may have a "perverse spirit", a "provoked spirit," a "hasty spirit," a "troubled spirit," a "contrite spirit," and a "humble spirit."

1) "perverse spirit"
"The Lord hath mingled a perverse spirit in the midst thereof: and they have caused Egypt to err in every work thereof, as a drunken man staggereth in his vomit."

Isaiah 19:14 KJV

2) "provoked spirit,"
"Because they provoked his spirit, so that he spake unadvisedly with his lips." 

Psalm 106:33 KJV

3) "hasty spirit,"
"He that is slow to wrath is of great understanding: but he that is hasty of spirit exalteth folly."

Proverbs 14: 29 KJV

4) "troubled spirit,"
"And it came to pass in the morning that his spirit was troubled; and he sent and called for all the magicians of Egypt, and all the wise men thereof: and Pharaoh told them his dream; but there was none that could interpret them unto Pharaoh."

Genesis 41:8 KJV

5) "contrite spirit,"
"For thus saith the high and lofty One that inhabiteth eternity, whose name is Holy; I dwell in the high and holy place, with him also that is of a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones."

Isaiah 57:15 KJV

6) "humble spirit."
"Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven."

Matthew 5:3 KJV

Also a man may very well be under a spirit of bondage, or impelled by the spirit of jealousy.

7) "spirit of bondage"
"For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father."

Romans 8: 15 KJV

8) "spirit of jealousy"
"and the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be defiled: or if the spirit of jealousy come upon him, and he be jealous of his wife, and she be not defiled:"

Man must therefore always pay attention and heed to his spirit, he must rule his spirit, by repentance make himself a new spirit and trust God to change his spirit. A man under the Holy Spirit of God must discern when evil passions are in control and when his spirit begins to manifest a perverse spirit. That is one of the many reasons why the Gift of the Discerning of Spirits is given to man.

When evil passions are in control and a person manifests a perverse spirit, this only means that the soul life or the SELF LIFE or NATURAL LIFE has dethroned his spirit. In other words the human spirit given to him by GOD has fought and lost.

The man becomes a prey to his natural senses and appetites. He becomes "carnal." We know that no flesh will glory in the presence of God. The spirit of man is no longer in control and becomes powerless. Its powerlessness is described as a state of death. Hence there is need for a "new spirit."

"Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me."

Psalm 51 10 KJV

 "Cast away from you all your transgressions, whereby ye have transgressed; and make you a new heart and a new spirit: for why will ye die, O house of Israel?"

Ezekiel 18: 31 KJV

Only HE who originally breathed into man's nostrils the breath of life can breathe into this man's soul a new "Spiritual Life."

John 3: 8 KJV

Colossians 3:10 KJV

 Now the situation changes completely as man submits to his Maker. When this happens something occurs in a man's spirit and now the spirit of man takes the place of ascendancy and he becomes "spiritual."

Yet, even with all this happening, the spirit of man cannot live of itself but must ALWAYS seek constant renewal by God's Spirit. Without HIM we will all die.
