The
concept of God as the Judge of His people is prevalent in the Psalms and
Prophets. In Psalm
9:4 David said of God, For you have judged
in my favor; from your throne, you have judged with fairness.
He added, But
the Lord reigns forever, executing judgment from his throne. He will judge
the world with justice and rule the nations with fairness.
Psalm
9:7-8, KJV
In Isaiah 2: 4,
the prophet describes a future day when God shall judge the nations and
Joel the prophet also spoke of God as the judge of the nations Joel 3:12.
"The
Lord will settle international disputes. All the nations will beat their
swords into plowshares and their spears into pruning hooks. All wars will
stop, and military training will come to an end."
Isaiah
2:4 KJV
Let the nations
be called to arms. Let them march to the valley of Jehoshaphat. There I,
the Lord, will sit to pronounce judgment on them all."
Joel
3:12 KJV
Statements like
The Judgment Seat of Christ formed part of the background for the New Testament
understanding of the judgment seat of God or Christ.
The image of
a judgment seat came from the fact that in the Roman world judgment took
place on a platform (Greek, bema) or tribunal, from which a judge would
hear and decide cases. Thus, most of the New Testament references to a
judgment seat occur when Jesus, or the apostle Paul, was brought before
a ruling authority.
For example,
Pilate sat on his judgment seat when he tried Jesus in Matthew
27:19; please also compare John
19:13; Acts 18:12,
16-17;
25:6,
10,
17.
The two passages
in the New Testament that speak directly of the judgment seat of God or
Christ are Romans 14:10, 11 and
2 Corinthians 5:10.
But
why dost thou judge thy brother? or why dost thou set at nought thy brother?
for we shall all stand before the judgment seat of Christ. For it is written,
As I live, saith the Lord, every knee shall bow to me, and every tongue
shall confess to God.
Romans
14: 10,11 KJV
In Romans 14:10
Paul addressed the urgent problem of unity within the church unity based
on a loving acceptance of those with different understandings of the effects
of faith in a Christian's daily life.
Paul urged the
Christians, both Jews and Gentiles, to accept one another in spite of differences
concerning eating certain foods and observing certain days. All, he reminded
them, must eventually stand before the judgment seat of God to give an
account of the way they had lived.
Further, since
God is the ultimate Judge, Christians should not judge one another.
"For
we must all appear before the judgment seat of Christ; that every one may
receive the things done in his body, according to that he hath done, whether
it be good or bad."
2
Corinthians 5: 10 KJV
Again, in 2 Corinthians
5 Paul told the Corinthian Christians why Christians strive to please the
Lord: all must appear before the judgment seat of Christ to be recompensed
for their deeds.
The judgment
seat of Christ or God, therefore, expresses the ultimate accountability
of the Christian.
In light of
all this, questions arise concerning the Judgment Seat of Christ. When
and where will it happen? Who will the participants be? What is the purpose
of this very intimate moment when believers will look into the eyes of
Jesus Christ in judgment?
Learn this
difference
We must understand
the difference between the way God deals with the sins of an unsaved person
and the sins of a saved person.
They are as
different as up and down, as daylight and dark, as north and south.
Until you learn
and understand these differences, the devil, yourself, your family and
friends can have a field day with you.
Any one or all
of them can place you under a guilt trip at their will. But not if you
understand the differences.

The Judgment Seat
of Christ will be a place and time of revealing. As we live and work here
in this life, it is relatively easy for us to hide things and pretend;
but the true character of our works and motives will be exposed before
the searching eyes of the Savior.
Jesus Christ
makes Himself the test to determine our genuineness. The life of Christ
is the only standard acceptable with God the Father. The only critical
discipline of the Christian life is to yield to the Holy Spirit to bring
us to absolute conformity to the likeness of Jesus Christ.
Why?
There is nothing
else that can endure the judgment of God.
